Leave the city behind and head in the direction of Cullinan, birthplace of the
biggest and most famous diamond in the world and home to the oldest diamond
mine still in existence. The Cullinan Diamond has subsequently been cut into
nine major stones, including the centerpieces of the British Royal Sceptre and
State Crown – as well as 96 smaller stones.
Diamonds are still Cullinan’s life and soul and you can take a tour of the mine, four times bigger than Kimberley’s famous ‘Big Hole’, from above or, if you’re brave enough, below the ground. Experienced guides will explain the history of the mine and you can watch as stones come to life in the cutting factory. |
